I would like to begin by saying what an absolute pleasure it was to judge the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels at Paignton and District Fanciers Association Championship show. It was a privilege to be given such a lovely appointment and I thoroughly enjoyed my day, thank you all for giving me such a super entry in a part of the country that’s a long way for pretty much everyone. I was delighted with the overall quality of the entry and particularly pleased with the consistency of type, balance, construction and movement in my final lineups. My sincere thanks go to my excellent stewards, whose help throughout the day was very much appreciated. Their organisation, efficiency and assistance made the judging a pleasure, particularly with a good entry and a busy day.
I was pleased with the overall quality presented to me. There were many Cavaliers with beautiful breed type, beautiful heads and expressions, sound construction and the correct free, elegant movement. It was encouraging to see so many exhibits that demonstrated the qualities required by the breed standard without exaggeration.
I would, however, like to make a general observation regarding presentation. Presentation is an important part of exhibiting any long coated breed, but it is also fundamentally connected with the welfare and care of the dog. I was genuinely surprised by the number of exhibits where the hair behind and inside the ears had not been properly brushed through, with some having matting within the ear feathering and into the ear canal. The Cavalier has long, well-feathered ears and these need regular attention to keep them clean, comfortable and free from mats. Good presentation should enhance the dog rather than disguise it. I would also encourage exhibitors to pay particular attention to dental hygiene. Clean, healthy teeth and good oral care are important aspects of responsible dog ownership and should not be overlooked simply because they are not always immediately apparent in the ring.
