It must be every judge’s dream to judge their ‘heart breed’ at the most famous dog show in the World, CRUFTS and here I was on that special green carpet! A huge thank you to Tom Mather and the Crufts Committee for this prestigious invitation and the whole experience. I first gave CCs in Cavaliers in 1998 and this was to be my 15th appointment at this level. A super entry of quantity and quality dogs awaited both my co-judge and myself and it was a great privilege and honour to judge such lovely dogs. Thank you. Personally, I had stayed away from most of the previous year’s dog show scene to give me a reasonable fresh opinion of the dogs that might be here today. This was how I wanted to prepare for this show. As such all the dogs were fairly new to me and I had no preconceived ideas. I was delighted with the depth of quality of the entry enhanced by the super overseas dogs that were entered.
As always judging is a compromise but apart from keeping the Breed Standard close in my mind’s eye I was looking for those three elements that make a good dog great: quality, temperament and soundness. I found this in abundance in this lovely entry and could have easily given out more prize cards in some classes, which bodes well for the future of our lovely breed. All four colours were well represented but as usual the blenheims held the top spots here today. Toplines, croups and tailsets are in my opinion the points to focus on.
I thoroughly enjoyed judging with my co-judge Mark Sedgwick and thanks also to my two stewards. Ultimately both myself and Mark thought our two top winners were both excellent examples of our breed and we were happy to let the referee decide between them and chose BOB, which went to the lovely bitch who did us proud in the Toy Group later on. The referee also chose the bitch puppy for BP.
Lastly; on a personal note, a huge thank you to my soulmate Andy for getting me ‘there’ and to mum and dad watching over me on that big green carpet from above. This was all down to mum and dad for setting up PAMEDNA CAVALIERS 35 years ago.

My notes say WOW! Great class of oldies. Has to be best veteran class I’ve ever judged, so many top quality dogs. Headed by affectionately known as ‘KAM’, a dog I judged as a youngster and gave BIS in France, now a youthful 8 year old. He screams quality from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Built on clean lines, lovely for size, good moderate bone and in beautiful muscle tone and condition. Sports a rich, fairly blanketed, chestnut coat of correct silky texture, beautifully turned out, nicely balanced and very sound and stylish on the move which is free and flowing, holding a firm topline and correctly carried tail. His head is dreamy, full of breed type, dark pigment, lovely large, dark sultry eyes giving soft expression, in correctly shaped skull, broad but gently rounding, no sharp angles here, correct ears placement with long fringes, lovely neck, a Top of the Range Cavalier, a dog of a lifetime to be sure....this was going to be the one to beat and from my first class! Loved him. Shortlisted for the DCC, BVIB
2nd Bubb’s Ch Wandris Evanly Legacy JW
Similar in size and shape to one, beautifully balanced, lovely angles, has to be handled to appreciate his soundness and correct structure, moved steady and true, lovely front and kicks off and drives from behind, well broken blenheim presented in lovely, silky coat, very glamorous, lovely for type, such a soft melting expression with those lovely dark eyes, well spaced and nicely cushioned, very good for type. Excellent example of the breed.

This little poppet was a bit naughty but he’s ever so nice too! Although stood alone he is top quality and very promising 8 months old, small compact richly, heavily, marked blen baby, nicely balanced, and when settled stood four square showing off his lovely shape, a true toy spaniel moved ok, just needs to settle but he has plenty of time, he’s going to be fun to watch. Lovely head and expression should finish well.

My eventual winner. This boy was really on his toes today and did not put a foot wrong. The more attention I gave him the more enthusiastic he became. A beautiful, ideally sized, compact, well balanced richly coated blenheim, shown here in tip top condition and beautifully presented. He oozes breed type, a glorious head, huge round dark expressive eyes well set on a generous broad skull. Correct ear set, well feathered. Excellent pigment. Moved well keeping a firm solid topline, carrying his tail well, straight off his back. Proud head carriage. Looked good in all directions. Lovely crested neck, make and shape and well balanced throughout. He has a lovely head piece, a little more feminine than 1. Softest of expression, with dark soulful eyes and good pigment. Almost flat between the well feathered ears, used his ears well. A real showman and wonderful temperament. Bitches Mr M Sedgwick (Pascavale)
A huge thankyou to the RKC for this wonderful invitation to judge at the worlds largest prestige dog show in the world, what a honour it was. Having spent 38 years in this wonderful breed I was not disappointed in the quality of bitches entered at this show, a lovely entry awaited me some travelling many miles from other countries. I was spoilt for choice in some classes, as always I went with an open mind to find the best cavaliers on the day in my opinion that would represent our wonderful breed, taken in to account our breed standard. Thank you to the sporting exhibitors who clapped and cheered along the way. Unfortunately when it came to best of breed, the lovely male that was sent through had close connections to me, so the fairest and honest thing to do was call the referee to declare a best of breed, I was delighted to see my Bitch take BOB, thank you to my co judge Maxine Fox-Shone, and to my two stewards who kept things moving throughout the day.
