I would like to direct a big THANK YOU to The Cavalier Club for the invitation to judge 2024 Club Show. It was such a fun day and I really loved it. There is nothing so fun and enjoyable as to judge Cavaliers — the melting eyes, the ever wagging tail and the sweet temperament. And when I attended my first UK Club Show almost 35 years ago I could never imagine that I would be invited to judge at one of these prestigious shows.
The atmosphere in the hall and around the ring was really lovely and happy and a wonderful "roll up" for the dog ring made a wonderful background for me. I would also like to say thank you to my efficient ring stewards Richard Cornaby and Terry Stanley who made everything run very smoothly.
We are living in a different time now where the breed is under the eyes of "dog welfare" activists, the breed is getting banned in some country and in others they start with crossbreeding projects for Cavaliers. It is so sad to see this happening because in my eyes, over the years as a breeder, I have always felt that Cavaliers are a healthy and long living breed. You don’t have to run to the vet for all different strange reasons and they live a happy, long life in your household.
With this said I just want to wish all clever Cavalier breeders the best of success in the future and to keep up the good work.

Bitches Mrs E Berwick (Merrylaine)
Firstly I would like to say thank you to the Cavalier Club for the honour of judging at this show. I first awarded CC’-s 32 years ago and since receiving this invitation 4 years ago I have been looking forward to this day immensely. It was so lovely to enter the hall full of people with an air of excitement in the room. The hall was beautifully decorated with various banners and spring flowers, congratulations to all concerned, I know how much hard work goes on behind the scenes and I am sure it was greatly appreciated by all who attended.
I was honoured to have a lovely entry of 212 waiting for me and would like to thank all the exhibitors for entering especially those who had travelled from overseas.
As judges we all judge to the breed standard through our own eyes and obviously see it slightly differently — today I was looking for an elegant free moving toy spaniel with a gentle expression which isn’t extreme in any areas. I felt the overall quality on the day was higher than in previous years when I have judged in the UK, there were a few domed heads and short stops which are not correct, please read the breed standard. A short stop completely changes a cavalier’s expression. Temperaments all day were excellent. There isn’t a perfect dog and I was spoilt for choice in many of the classes and was more than happy with my unbeaten lineup. In a number of cases I was splitting hairs, the open class was one of the best classes I have ever judged.
It was a pleasure to be sharing the day with Joakim Ohlsson from Sweden all our final decisions on the day were unanimously agreed.
A final personal note, a huge thank you to my two stewards both dear friends — Kirstie and Lucy for helping to keep the day running smoothly, we had a mammoth task and between us we managed to keep to time. I couldn’t have asked for anybody better to be part of the day and lastly it was so lovely to have my mum sitting ringside all day, she had judged this show 15 years ago, this lovely breed has taken our family down a very happy road since they entered our lives in 1973. It truly is a day I will never forget.
