Dogs Mr A Shone (Pamedna)
It was a great honour and a privilege to be asked to award my first set of Challenge Certificates in both sexes at the 160th Birmingham National Dog Show. I would like to thank the committee and Show Secretary in organising a well-run and well executed show. I was so pleased for the society that exhibitors supported the show with an entry of 167 dogs (191) and a heart felt thank you to all exhibitors allowing me the great privilege of judging their cavaliers. In several classes, the depth of quality meant that some lovely exhibits went away without being in the cards which is no reflection on their quality, just the very high standard of competition in that class. Also in a couple of classes the top 3 could have easily changed places as their quality made decisions extremely hard and it was down to splitting dog hairs.
I have commented before on the Bitches "my main concern in the bitches was that some were too fine and needed more substance. The girls are our future breeding stock and need some substance to pass on," and this is still the case. Some bitches are becoming too small. It was lovely to see all four colours represented here today and fantastic that 3 out of the four colours were in the top honour placings. I make no apologies for including so many bitches in my BCC short list (or maybe that should be long list) as such was the quality of the final line-up in bitches.
Overall, all the "dogs" had wonderful temperaments, excellently presented and I found quality and typical "dogs" which reminded me why I came into, fell in love with and feel so passionate about this breed. I do worry, that in today’s climate of Judges Frameworks and financial pressures on societies that the clamour for multi-breed judges will have a detrimental effect on the number of breed specialists and subsequently the quality, soundness and type of a breed in general. For it is the breed specialist that is ultimately the custodian of a breed, not just passing through. We should all remember the reason for judging, in my opinion, is to guide a breed, nurture the positives and strive to improve the breed for future generations, rather than enhancing your judges cv, looking for the next appointment and aspiring to judge groups. Here endeth the sermon.

Minor Puppy (10, 3) A lovely class.
1st Bloomfield’s Delhaze Reach For The Sky with Oaklake
Mature 7 month well marked Blenheim with dark eyes, correct ear set creating a soft melting expression. Moderate bone, feathering already coming through. Correct front and rear angulation producing drive. Stood 4 square and moved with parallel action. Level top line. Won this class on type, construction and ring presence, could not be ignored, totally "scrummy" one to watch for the future. BPD, BPIB

Junior (10, 4)
1st Levy & Sedgwick’s Pascavale Haiden
I will start by saying certainly not 2nd best to Open winner – see later. When this dog went round initially I was captivated by his movement and presence and once I got my hands on him, he did not disappoint. My notes say – head – see breed standard, so correct and not exaggerated in anyway. 14 month Blenheim dog of such quality with everything in proportion. Everything is correct; construction, eyes, soft melting expression, tapered muzzle, ear set, tail set and tail carriage, loin, balance, drive and movement. I knew at the end of this class that this was the Dog that all others here today had to beat. In my opinion, this dog is of such quality, he has a lot to offer to the gene pool in this country. DCC, BOB
2nd Smith’s Beaudale Storm In A Teacup

I love this dogs head properties, lovely round dark eyes, correct ear set framing a masculine head with nice arch of neck. Nicely cushioned face with tan markings creating a melting expression. Nearly 3 year old masculine Black and Tan in lovely coat and condition today. Level top line moved well. Would just prefer a shorter coupling but still a quality B&T.
2nd Lewis’ Carleeto Joe Cocker
13 month old Black and Tan smaller than 1st but not the head properties of 1st, finer and smaller but in proportion. Lovely shape and construction but still a baby. Nice expression, just needs to mature and head needs to break to fully reach his potential.

In my last 4. Quality 3½ year old Black and Tan who easily won this class. Fabulous shape and outline on this well-constructed male. Dark, expressive, round eyes, well cushioned, framed by long leathers giving a gentle pleasing expression. Correct tan markings. Covered the ground as if walking on air. Long raven black coat of correct texture and colour. Another exhibit I believe worthy of the title Champion.
2nd Barwell’s Charlottetown Midas Touch
2 year old Blenheim dog who stood four square with a nice outline. Expressive eyes and masculine head.
3rd Slack’s Kinvaar Jumping Jack Flash at Eversbabes
Open (6, 0) Excellent class.
1st McMurray’s Harana Jack Jones at Merryoth
Won this difficult, quality class then my notes say ‘bugger’. A dog who had his crown in his paws and threw it away on the day with his performance in the challenge. Totally unsettled and mind elsewhere at the key moment. Could not outshine the Junior winner on today’s performance. 4 year old well broken Blenheim dog who I have judged elsewhere earlier in his career and he went on to gain top honours at that outing albeit Group Open Show. I sincerely believe this exhibit is a Champion in waiting and his owner should not get disheartened with today’s performance. Another exhibit whose head is straight out of the breed standard. Soft melting expression, large dark well cushioned eyes, good pigment, correct length and taper of muzzle framed by well feathered correctly positioned ears. Level top line, nicely angulated body with correct tail carriage.
2nd Sedgbeer’s Ch Castlewytch Rave On with Russmic JW
Really, really close decision. A fantastic quality exhibit whose head again is straight from the breed standard. Full of breed type. Balanced toy spaniel every inch the Champion just beaten by 1st being more "on his toes" today in the class.
3rd Levy & Sedgwick’s Pascavale Gino
Quality well marked 21 month Blenheim Dog as can be expected from this kennel, just a little too much in the head for me, but that is just personal preference. Nicely angulated front and rear, moved with drive.

My notes simply say ‘Ben’, and I mean no offence to the owner by drawing the comparison. I apologise for being repetitive but another exhibit whose head is straight out of the breed standard. 8½ year old Black and Tan with long raven black coat of correct colour and texture. Soft melting expression, large dark eyes, well cushioned, good pigment, correct length and taper of muzzle framed by well feathered correctly positioned ears. Correct rich tan markings. Level top line, nicely angulated body with correct tail carriage. Covered the ground with ease and gave the overall impression of a gentle easy going persona and despite his years never stopped showing. Another exhibit every inch the Champion, an honour to assess him and a credit to his owner. RDCC and BV.
2nd Lunt’s Oaktreepark Alfie
Nearly 9 year old Blenheim dog presenting a lovely shape and type.

2nd Taylor’s Chambecc Shimmer
16 month heavily marked tricolour bitch with nice head and expression. Again needs more furnishings to finish.
Minor Puppy (17, 3)
1st Butler’s Tamyse Tickled Pink
Beautifully feminine headed just 6 month old Blenheim bitch who is lovely for moderate bone, construction and balance. Melting eyes and expression framed by correct ear set so synonymous with the breed. Angles front and rear are correct producing drive from the rear. A chunky monkey not dissimilar to my minor puppy dog winner. Coat on the blow today but once the baby fluff has gone, one to watch as I pulled her out for further accolades today.
2nd Bayliss’s Castlewytch Blue Moon
Another just 6 month old Blenheim bitch with correct angulation and construction. Shown in good condition. Soft expressive eyes and correct ear set. Moved with drive and balance lovely for size and shape. Close decision, just preferred the more feminine head of 1st, which should not be seen as a criticism of 2nd.

Wow, clean cut, smart well broken 10 month old Blenheim Bitch. Exquisite overall shape and outline resulting from correct angulation. Correct tail carriage, level top line leading to a good reach and arch of neck. Head in proportion with lovely expressive dark eyes, correct ear set with enough feathering for her age to give that melting feminine look. Moved well, but for me, just needs to tighten at the rear which will come with age. No doubt this superb example will go on to top honours. One I certainly considered today. BPB
2nd Claydon’s Brymarden Breeze
Similar to 1st but slightly heavier cast (not a criticism) 11 month old well broken Blenheim bitch. Again a pleasing feminine soft expression with dark eyes. Good reach of neck. Good angulation front and rear providing drive on the move. Just preferred the outline of 1st. These two will change places throughout their respective careers.

2nd Potter’s Toyswood China Girl
10 month chunky monkey Black and Tan with moderate bone, lovely for size, shape and angles. Correct tail carriage. Lovely rich tan and raven black coat of correct texture. So aptly named. Love the head on this 2 year old Tricolour girl. Correct ear set with bright tan ‘eyebrows’ perfectly placed with dark limpid eyes giving her the gentle feminine expression. Great size and angulation, presented beautifully as can be expected from this kennel. Ample reach and drive with good tail carriage. Another pulled out in my final cut. Top quality.

Exquisite, nearly 3 year old Ruby bitch shown in excellent coat and condition. Lovely round dark expressive eyes, exuding femininity, no hint of coarseness or frown which can so ruin a Ruby expression. Head held proud and aloft on an arched neck projecting the balanced picture with a short loin and correct tail carriage. Lovely angles front and rear and moved with drive and purpose. Pushed the Limit bitch hard .This Ruby will be another gaining her title soon, I am sure. Literally, a dog hairs breadth of going further than the awarded RBCC.
2nd Loynd’s Crimbledale Betty Boo
Lovely 4 year old Black and Tan bitch shown in excellent condition. Rich tan markings, raven black coat nicely presented. Nicely angulated and moved with drive. Feminine head but another exhibit squinting today.

1st Sidgwick’s Salegreen Peony for Paulian JW ShCM
Another exhibit I have judged before as a puppy and gone on to top honours at the same Group Open Show. Slow to mature this bitch’s forte has been her construction and balance up to now, lovely angles, level top line, correct tail carriage, drive, head carried on an arched neck. In my opinion this 4 year old Blenheim’s head has softened and matured and now she has the complete package. She has the biggest roundest dark eyes of the entry today, but that said they are correct for her head, no hint of bulging, startled or over exaggeration. Soft feminine expression framed by well feathered correctly carried ears. She went round as if she owned the ring and she could not be ignored today. Pleased to award her the BCC which her owner later advised me was her crowning 3rd. BCC
2nd McMurray’s Cinderaic Are You For Me at Merryoth
Nearly 4 year old Blenheim bitch in good coat and condition. Such dark expressive eyes, framed by correct ear set, nice reach of neck and shoulders, level top line with good rear angulation. Stood, she showed her profile overall size and shape off and she moved well. A very happy showgirl.

1st Claydon’s Ch Brymarden Honeybun
I loved this bitch prior to her heady show career and so she has stormed on winning numerous well deserved accolades. Nearly 3 year old, well broken richly coloured Blenheim bitch. She has such a lovely head, good ear set, well tapered muzzle and dark expressive eyes. Very well made throughout with a good front, reach of neck and shoulder placement. Just feel, for me, she needs to fill out and mature to complete the overall picture, possibly her best is yet to come. One I considered further.
2nd Butler’s Tamyse Toot Sweet
This is another exhibit I have judged and I awarded her BIS at the Club Show back in 2013. A beautiful 7 year old Blenheim bitch only beaten by youth today. Moved true front and back, beautifully made, still having that soft feminine expression with dark limpid, well cushioned eyes, correct muzzle length and taper that so stole my heart all those years ago. In my opinion, an exhibit straight out of the pages of the breed standard, but, sadly today, feeling her years. I appreciate life getting in the way of exhibiting, this is a bitch who should have gone on, but her owner should take comfort in two Bitch Challenge Certificates, one at Crufts, illustrate this girl’s super qualities.
3rd Spall & Clark’s Llapsttam’s Killer Queen
Not sure what batteries were used for this Black and Tan but she moved around the ring like a fire-cracker. Certainly over charged, needs to calm down a lot to allow proper assessment of her lovely angulation and movement. Lovely Black and Tan in full raven black coat and nice tan. Expressive dark eyes and pleasing feminine expression. Another Champion in waiting.
