LOW COST MRI SCHEMES FOR CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIELS
The following is a list of MRI centres that have contacted the CKCS Club offering reduced rate MRI scans to owners who would like their cavaliers checked for Chiari Malformation & Syringomyelia.
These scans are ‘mini scans’ and only scan the neck region.
Mini scans are not suitable where a dog is showing symptoms as a full scan will need to be performed for diagnostic reasons and appropriate treatment.
The list is not exhaustive and additional facilities are frequently being added.
Within the UK the cost is generally around £200 - £300 inclusive of VAT per dog. Some centres offer a discount for more than one dog.
Except where quoted, additional charges are applicable for submission under the formal KC/BVA Scheme.
It is recomended that owners check and confirm all details with individual centres when booking an appointment and discuss how the procedure is carried out. For example some centres scan the head & cervical region under sedation where others use anaesthesia.
It is recomended that owners verify that MRI scans are performed and reviewed in accordance with the KC/BVA CM/SM Screening Scheme and as detailed in the "Proposed BVA/KC Syringomyelia MRI Screening Scheme
This list is provided for information only and inclusion in the list does not mean endorsement by the Cavalier Club. The CKCS Club is not responsible for how MRI scans are performed nor the results that are obtained.
The BVA maintain a list of practices that have already submitted scans for assessment in accordance with the BVA/KC Scheme. Click to view

Downs Referrals has extended a scheme currently being run by Clare Rusbridge (RCVS and European Specialist in Veterinary Neurology) at Stone Lion Veterinary Referrals in London, to screen breeding stock.
The scheme comprises a reduced scanning fee - £250 + VAT, with a further discount applicable for clients with multiple dogs. This will provide a limited MRI scan which will be submitted for grading and certification by Clare Rusbridge.
A veterinary consultation will not be included as part of this fee. Dogs will be admitted by a veterinary nurse, but all pre-anaesthesia examinations and scans will be supervised by a veterinary surgeon. There will be no consultation upon discharge to discuss the findings prior to receiving the certification from Clare Rusbridge.
Participating dogs must be free of any signs of the disease (it is not intended to be used as a cut-priced way of confirming the breeder's suspicions in clinical cases) or other known anaesthetic risk, and they will be required to fill in a consent form pertaining to this.
To receive a certificate, owners will need to provide proof of ownership, and the dog's pedigree name with registration number.
